What single word would you suggest for an herbalist shop? Gregory Unrein, a pharmacist specialising in herbal remedies calls his shop in Nice, an herboristerie. I shall call it a herbalistary in English, to bring forth the connotation of a dispensary and an herbalist dispensing medicinal herbs.
Unrein’s herbalistary is an elegant shop nestled in the old quarters of Nice, quite easily one of the nicest cities of the world, nestling between the Mediterranean Sea and the French Alps, lined with a beautiful sandy beach, and paved with the Promenade des Anglais to remind us of its cosmopolitan history. The city, Italian once, reflects this heritage well with its splendid buildings that echo Naples, but kept in such pristine condition that they would make many Neapolitans blush when compared to their own much-graffitied buildings and neglected centre-ville.
Unrein’s shop was busy when I visited in September 2023. The man himself was out front dispensing free advice on the herbs he sold. A South-East Asian man, pointing at the mushroom products on one shelf wanted to know if they were psychedelic.
‘No, no’, said Unrein firmly. ‘These contain mushrooms for boosting immunity. Reishi mushrooms.’.
Perhaps disappointed, the man walked away with his party of four to come back with little bundles of Californian white sage (Sauge blanche Caifornienne, Salvia apiana). Unrein promotes it as a purifier of some sort, to be burnt perhaps as incense. Native American peoples use the seeds as a food and a brew of the leaves as a healing and tonic after childbirth.
Soon after, Unrein was advising a woman who appeared to me in her early forties on libido and testosterone. I did not pry to find out what was recommended but scanning Unrein’s shelves I found herbal concoctions with the suggestive names Régul Hormone and La Féminne.
Are they effective? That’s between the lovers. Unrein would say yes based on testimonials. The drug regulators would say, ‘Where is the hard evidence?’

Champignons Reishi’.Peut-être déçu, l’homme est reparti avec son groupe de quatre pour revenir avec des petits paquets de sauge blanche Californienne (Salvia apiana). Unrein en fait la promotion comme un purificateur pour bruler. Les peuples amérindiens utilisent les graines comme aliment et une infusion de feuilles comme cicatrisant et tonique après l’accouchement. Peu de temps après, Unrein conseillait une femme qui me semblait au début de la quarantaine sur la libido et la testostérone. Je n’ai pas cherché à savoir ce qui était recommandé, mais en parcourant les étagères d’Unrein, j’ai trouvé des concoctions à base de plantes aux noms évocateurs de Régul Hormone et de La Féminne. Sont-ils efficaces? C’est entre les amoureux. Unrein dirait oui sur la base de témoignages.
